Chairman’s report
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT TO THE EDVA FOR SEASON 2007-08
Considering the desire to have some uniformity within the Committee by having a number of key posts held by members of Torexe Volleyball Club, I believe that this season has been a big success.
The enthusiasm of the Fixture Secretary and the Press/Competitions Secretary has been very instrumental to the success. The website and coverage in the local press has helped, also the staging of such events as the Exeter Challenges and the Junior International Triangular Event involving two local teams and Guernsey.
The League proved to be very exciting, especially with the Division One title going to the last match of the season. Congratulations go to Kirton for pulling off the title by one point from Torexe Buzzards. The Division Two title was also well contested by Taunton, the Birdmen and Torexe Falcons and in the end, it was I believe refreshing to see the Exeter Prison Team take it, as they had been consistently very good throughout the season.
It was pleasing to see a number of players at the end of season get-together at the Riverside, also the decision to award T-shirts to the winning teams instead of trophies was the right one, proving popular. However, as a Committee, I think we still have to strive to improve the social side. The presentation of awards needs to have more profile. We did manage to use the Coaver Evening League to present the Trophy to Kirton and give a prize to the most Valuable Male Player of the Season and hopefully on 27th July we will have a representative team play the Birdmen at the prison before giving them their Trophy and T-shirts.
I would like to thank the Committee for doing a terrific job and I know there are ideas to make next season even better. The attendance from the Clubs was excellent and I believe that has contributed greatly to the success. We have tried to be as transparent as possible.
I personally have enjoyed the role of Chairman, but I do still stand by the view that with Torexe Members in key positions on the Committee, that someone from the other clubs, ought to be Chairman. I know those Torexe members agreed to do their jobs for two years to establish stability and I am happy to continue, but if someone else would like the role, I will not be offended, as I continue to enjoy being Chairman of Torexe VC and doing two such roles is a bit greedy!!!

Fixtures Sec Report
After a rather hectic start to get the fixtures in place it has on the whole been a very good season with a lot of close matches and as stated in the Chairman’s report it proved to be a very tight finish in both Division’s. We started the season with 16 teams, showing that there is still a good demand for volleyball within the area. We unfortunately lost Wood Warriors part way through the season, but look forward to welcoming them and their new roof back next season! Over 90 matches were played during the season, with only a handful not taking place for a variety of reasons. I would like to thank the budding reporters out there who put together some great match reports, which made very entertaining reading and hope that it will encourage others to have a go next year.
My thanks go to Ian Sidwell for the use of his software and his help in making changes during the season, which was instrumental in keeping the results and tables up to date and visible for everyone to see on the web. I hope that we can keep using again for next season.
The survey, which was carried out part way through the season, also gave the committee a good mandate for continuing in future years and has already given rise to the summer beach league. Looking forward to next season there are still some areas which need addressing and further work, these include more opportunities for ladies volleyball, ideas are in place for a series of one-off events around the region, which need to be formalized. As always there is more work required on refereeing and ensuring all matches get referees and on getting more courses into the region, both for refereeing and coaching.
I have learnt a lot in my first season in the role and I am happy to continue for another season to hopefully do a better job next year, unless of course there is someone else out there just dying to have a go!
Tournament Sec Report
Although we are very fortunate to have a number of individuals and organisations who put on and run volleyball events in this area. A number of other events are missing from our program. The results of the players survey also indicated the types of events our members would like to see and where they would like the committee to focus on.
Both Beach and Junior events featured high in the results and hence the committee has set up the EDVA Exmouth Beach League summer program, with beach drop in nets and training nets. I would also like to thank all the organisations around the table who have lent us their beach equipment, over 60 people have used the facility so far.
The association sponsored the Coaver Junior tournament, the indoor Junior International in February and will be running this weekend Exmouth Beach Junior tournament. Junior training has also been supported at St. Luke’s in Exeter and we have also run trial sessions in Crediton and Exmouth.
Overall a very successful and enjoyable season.
Press Sec. Report
Our first task was to re-started the EDVA web site, so members and clubs could be kept up to date with the league programs, to this we also added a number of new features, access to all scoresheets, POTM awards etc. A press and media section was also added and various items forwarded to the local press in Exeter, East Devon and Taunton. We also had various item in the Volleyball newsletter and a few match videos shown on the Volleyball Video Channel.
At the beginning of the summer, we introduced the Exmouth Beach Volleyball Web site, again this has been very successful in providing a single online location for all beach events this summer.
Re-Election of Officers
All officers were re-elected individually and remain the same as last season.
Youth Development officer and Officials officer post are still vacant. – Further discussion as to whether the E.D.V.A. needs an officer to promote volleyball to all ages. General public seems to find volleyball clubs through the internet.
New Post
Due to the success of the beach league it was felt that a Beach Co-ordinator post was needed.
N.B. Proposed Ali West, Ros.S. 2nd, All clubs in favour.
A.O.B.
Ros.S. requested that present officials on the committee that have only committed to serving one more year, start scouting for willing volunteers to take over their role. R. Sw. asked for other clubs to try and take on some of the roles.
Tracy Pearse is looking to resurrect a junior club in Okehampton and will need some funding.
