[team] charged into a 12 point lead in the opening set at [venue] but their own failings made it a struggle from then on. Poor first balls and untidy transition from defence to attack meant they had to work very hard to take the opening two sets. But although [team] came back to win the third, the [team] men found their form in the fourth to clinch the match.

[team] consolidated their position at the top of the Exeter League with a fine victory over [team] 15-9, 15-3, 15-8. [team] who were in fine form with [player] and [player]  all spiking well.

In their first game since [date], [team] played one of their finest sets this season to start. The digging was accurate and high allowing setters [player] and [player] to perfect spikable balls to [player] and [player]. These combinations worked so well that the set would have been
over more quickly but for some superb blocking by [team].

[team] scraped the first set, and then had to battle back from 13-6 down in the second after skipper [player] had given them a stern talking to following a time out. Gradually they fought their way back into the set, the volleyball was effective and they made it a second set victory.

After taking a set off [team] last week, this week they took two sets off [team] to win the match 7-15, 15-13, 15-8. The better results are mainly due to playing a simple, straight forward game and having a larger squad of players.

It has been another exciting week in the Exeter and District Volleyball League with most of the action coming from [venue] Sports Centre. In Division 2, [team] traveled there to take on their rivals for top spot, [team]. Neither teams had suffered defeat and this contributed to the interest
in the fixture. The game started evenly enough and it looked as if it would produce the predicted close finish. This was not to be, however, as [team] pulled away from the mid-set stage to win 15-7. In the second set [team] never found their feet and lost 15-1 but in the final set, they rallied to produce some fine volleyball. However, by this time [team] were fully fired up and took the set 15-7. The player of the match was [player] of [team].

[team] bid to reach the final of the national Kestors cup came to an end at [venue] Sports Centre with a 3-1 defeat. [team] began the game strongly and cheered on by a small but noisy crowd the first set was won 15-5, with the team in dominant form. The second set began well but suddenly developed into a crisis of confidence, allowing [team] to rebuild their game and the set was lost. This seemed to drain the home team and during the next two sets, despite hard work from coach [player], the form of that first set eluded them.

[team] visited [venue], [location, in an Exeter League Division One fixture and overcame a slow start to win 13-15, 15-9, 15-12. Both teams’ spikers hit well but it was the accurate and varied setting of [player] and the improvement of the [team] defence that decided the tie.

In the first Division, the match between [team] and [team] provided some excellent long rallies and hard won points. [team] managed to hang on to their lead to win the first set 15-9. The combination of some fine setting to [player] spiking was complemented by the good back court cover provided by [player] and [team] eventually took the second set. The blocking of [player] and [player] denied Channings Wood’s [player] of
some winning shots, but [players] efforts were rewarded on being nominated player of the match. [team] came back almost unchallenged to take the last set leaving the final score in the favour of [team] 15-9, 15-9, 3-15.

It was all to play for in the final and deciding rally point set but after some rotational faults by [team], [team] took the lead and kept it for a 15-11 win over a now disheartened [team] side.

[team] finished their first ever season in the Exeter & District League on a high note, with a victory over [team] of [location] in [venue]
at the weekend. [team], who were relegated from the first division last season, are probably the strongest side in the league and currently lie second. Never the less, the current form of the team suggested that a win for [team] was a distinct possibility. However it was [team] who established an early 4-0 lead but [team] produced some of their best volleyball of the season in the opening set, with accurate digging and
high sets allowing hitters [player] and [player] to clock up the points. This combination worked so well that the set would have been over more quickly but for some superb blocking by [team]. In the second set [team] confidence sagged at the start when, [team] took a 4-0 lead but [player] whose consistent serving is always one of the teams steadying influences kept the team in check. Some fast and furious returns, and
good blocking by both sides took the match to 13-9, when [team] took advantage of some rotation faults on the other side of the net to take the final two points and the match. One of the main reasons for the good result was the form of setter [player]. Her accurate setting and covering play has not been available to the team for much of the season.

Unbeaten [team] beat the [team] team 15-8, 15-6, 15-10 in the Exeter and District Volleyball League, but it was not one of their best displays and they were lucky not to have had more points taken off them. [team], who were with out captain [player], were slow to get going and did not
capitalise on some of their chances, particularly in the second set. [player] played a steady game and finished off the third set with a fine series of serves while [player] proved that he could spike after all and deservedly took the player of the match award.

[team] fortunes in Division One of the Exeter Volleyball League have taken a turn for the better. After the disappointment of early season defeats at [team], the Exeter based team has now dropped only one set in their last four fixtures.

Following their 2-1 loss at [venue], [team] gained a 3-0 victory in their first home match of the season against [team], at the [venue] Sports Centre. [team] skipper [player] always looked dangerous and the first set could have gone either way, until the home side took the advantage and pulled away to win 15-7. The second set was a similar affair, with the [team] defence playing particularly well. However, player of the match [player] broke the deadlock with some positive spiking enabling [team] to take the set 15-8. [team] could not salvage anything in the final set, as [team]  looked far more confident to win 15-4.

[team] beat [team] in straight sets, 15-1, 15-9, 15-3, with a fine display of serving and domination at the net. Player of the match [player] gave his spikers a good supply of high balls, which enabled [player] and [player] to power home the advantage against the new look [team] side.

[team] Exeter and District League side continued their unbeaten run with a two sets to one victory over [team] at the [venue]. With the net slightly lower than the normal eight feet, [team] confidently took the first two sets 15-11 and 15-9. In the third, [team] stormed into a 12-6 lead before a late rally by [team] proved not quite enough to stop [team] eventually winning the set 15-13.

[team] Exeter and District League side began their new campaign after winning promotion to Division Two with what at first seemed likely to be an easy win over [team]. [team] romped away with the first two sets, 15-1 and 15-2, but then had to save a number of set points as [team] put their game together in the third set which [team] eventually clinched 19-17.

General Play

[team] fought back from 5-12 down in the deciding set to beat [team] 15-12 in a thrilling Second Division match in the Exeter Volleyball league. Despite their lack of experience, [team] never gave up and even at 5-9 down in the final set, their concentration remained solid as they battled towards a remarkable victory.

[team], 8-3 up in the first set through a combination of good serving from [player] and [team], hung on to take it despite [team], inspired by man of the match [player], fighting back with eight straight points.

[team] levelled when, from 8-12 down, they took advantage of a crucial misunderstanding by [team] in the second set.

[team] edged away in the third and the game seemed to be slipping away from [team] but then began their exciting fight back.

In the second set [team] never found their feet and lost 15-8 but in the final set, they rallied to produce some fine volleyball. However by this time [team] were fully fired up and took the set 15-7.

[team], who were without captain [player], were slow to get going and did not capitalise on some of their changes, particularly in the second set. [player] played a steady game and finished off the third set with a fine series of serves while [player] deservedly took the player of the match award.

The forth set was close with some good rallies, [team] just ahead at the end to win 15-13 and the match by three sets to one.

but [team] were pleased that they did at last begin to show some good form in their match against the students, scoring many good points.

[team] had now got their players warmed up and the second set could have gone either way, and during the twenty five minute long set, the lead changed several time. It was not until player of the match [player] stepped up to server at 12 all, and served for the last few point of the set, that Torexe looked like winning it.

The third set was more of the same for the first ten minutes, them [team] took control of the set and raced away with the lead, taking the set 15:10 over a now rather tied set of [team] players.

At the [venue] Sports Centre it was a different story, the team was by now well warmed up and got quickly into the match plan. Which found plenty of holes in the [team] defence, taking the first set 15:4.

Match Lose

[team] lost 10-15, 7-15, 10-15 to reigning Exeter League First Division champions [team] at [venue] Sports Centre. Despite the defeat, it was an encouraging performance by [team] who are improving with every game after the long summer break, [player] was the outstanding player of the match with her accurate setting for [team].

In the first match against visitors [team], they lost three sets to two after a tense final set in which [team]’s rhythm was upset by a scoring mix up when they were heading for a win.

[team] improved in the second set and [team], after serving at 10-all, lost it 15-10. [team] produced some of their best volleyball of the season in the opening set of their match against [team], but once [team] had found their rhythm they overhauled their opponents and raced to a 15-10, 15-8, 15-11 victory. [player] and [player] had good games for the losers while the whole [team] team did well with setter [player] consistently providing spikable balls.

[team] had a completely new line-up for their first game of the [year] season and lost by three sets to nil (5-15, 3-15, 4-15) against Exeter & District League champions [team]. [team] have quite a few problems on their court cover to iron out before their next match.

The [team] were under strength for this match, and despite bringing in their new signing, [player], appeared to lack hitting power, which is something that the [team] always have plenty of. [player], [team]’s centre, must be doing something right though, as he received yet another player of the match award in this game.

A hard fought game took place at [venue] where the home side took on [team]. The [location] team snatched the first set 15-13, but the [team]
returned the compliment with a 15-13 win in the second. Both teams had everything to play for in the final set, but it was the visitors who stole the points, with a 15-12 triumph.

Players Performance

One of the main reasons for the good result was the form of middle hitter [player]. His powerful hitting and solid defensive play has not been available to [team] for much of the season. But in the games he has played for [team] he has greatly boosted the attack and raised general the team play.

With [player] back in action for the first time since receiving a nasty ankle injury nearly a year ago.

Setting consistency and the return of powerful hitter [player] earned them a 2-1 victory over relegated [team].

And they claimed [team] scalp by the same margin, spikers [player] and [player] were in great form, taking full advantage of the work of setters
[player] and [player].

The [team] fielded a full strength squad, while the [team] were without their captain, [player], who was out with flu. The experienced [team] side
controlled the game from the start, and so the impressive serving kept the pressure on the [team]. [player] was the [team]s’ main weapon, and the [team] really had no answer to his powerful spikes, as they took the first set 15-6 .

The [team] showed some determination in the second set, and even held the lead for a while, with spiker [player] giving the [team] a dose of their own medicine.’ In the final set, there was a loss of morale among the [team], and the confident [team] strolled to a 15-2 victory.

Carding

However, one over enthusiastic outburst after a point winning smash, was deemed ‘aggressive’ by the referee, and the [team]’s spiker was red-carded (which results in loss of service in volleyball). The teams battled-it out for the rest of the set, but [team] took the honours, 15-10.
