Volleyball England Youth Forum

Dear Club Chair and Secretaries,
I’m currently working on establishing a Volleyball England Youth Forum as we have been fortunate enough to receive funding from V-Inspired to do so. I am intending on recruiting a group of about 4 to 6 young people (16 to 24 year olds). They will be used as a focus group to help inform us how best to recruit young people as players and volunteers but also they will have some of their own projects to work on.

I have also sent details of this to any young people who are registered with us but if you could encourage any young people within your club who might be particularly suited to being on the Youth Forum to apply that would be great. Please speak to me if you’d like any more details or think the Youth Forum could be of use in your area of work in any way.

Thanks, Ilona Berry, National Volunteer Development Officer, Volleyball England i.berry@volleyballengland.org

New Beach Net
The EDVA / Exmouth Beach VC has recently received a new beach net and four competition court lines (about £500 worth), many thanks to Sue Back for the donation.

Watch your Equipment

Not sure if it's a sign of the current economic climate or down to new venue owners but I have heard two stories in the SW recently where Sport Centres owners have decided to get ride of, or sell unwanted / unrecognized equipment in their store rooms.

One double court venue has disposed of a set of volleyball posts (leaving just one set!), another clubs has seen their long training net and associated equipment disappear? It unusual to hear stories like this, so if it's not locked away, you may wish to take steps to highlight your equipment with the venue staff / owners.

Ex-international Arthur nets spot in hall of fame

The Express & Echo has an item on Arthur Mosley being inducted into the Don Anthony Hall of Fame, which pays tribute to heroes of volleyball in Britain. You can see the item at the following link: Express and Echo

To Volleyball clubs

Volleyball England wishes to invite you to a regional workshop event on Saturday 22nd January. This is an important event and is your chance to contribute and have your say with regards to the development of Volleyball in your area. The event will run for 10am-2.30pm and will be held at Priory Community School, Queensway, Weston-Super-Mare, BS22 6DP. Travel expenses will be covered at 20p/mile and lunch will be provided...

...In order to collect views in advance of the workshop, we have designed a short survey. Please click on http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/33JXLM to complete the survey - it should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete but will provide vital information to inform discussions on the day. Even if you are unable to attend the workshop, please complete the survey as your views are very important to us.

If you have any questions with regards to the workshop or the survey please contact me on s.johnson@volleyballengland.org. If you could confirm attendance at the workshop by return of email that would be very helpful. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards
Stuart Johnson, Head of Development, Volleyball England

SW Development Plan

To Volleyball clubs, coaches and referees in the SW:

Can you help to shape the development of volleyball in the SW?

The SW Volleyball Association will soon be working with officers from Volleyball England to produce a new Development Plan for volleyball in the region. It is important that players, coaches, referees and all those involved in our sport are involved in deciding how volleyball should develop. I would therefore like to invite you to join us for a session with the Volleyball England staff at Priory Community School, Weston super Mare, North Somerset on Saturday January 22nd from 10.30 to 2.30.

Lunch will be provided and travel costs will be covered (at 20p per mile). Further information and a formal invitation will be sent over the next few days, and I hope that you will be able to join us.

Net Contact - an Updated Video

Contact with the net by a player is not a fault unless it interferes with play.

Examples of net contacts which are still considered as faults would include any contact with the top band of the net (or antenna) during any action of playing the ball. Contacts which either create an unfair advantage, or which hinder an opponent’s legitimate attempt to play the ball, would also continue to be penalised as net contacts.

However, a setter who gently brushes the mesh of the net whilst playing the ball should no longer be penalised. Similarly, a blocker or hitter who brushes the net (on the way up or down) is no longer considered to be making a net fault, unless there is contact with the top band.

Any “taking support” from the net – leaning into the net, or holding the mesh, or any action which significantly distorts the position of the top band of the net – is still a fault, as is any contact which prevents the opponent from being able to play the ball.

New EDVA Chairman

Arthur Mosley has now taken over as EDVA Chairman, from Ros Sutherland at this weeks committee meeting (8/12/10). We would all like to thank Ros for her work during the last couple of seasons and welcome Arthur to the chair.

Equality Act 2010

The Government has made some changes through the Equality Act 2010 which may affect some private clubs and other types of associations, including some volleyball clubs. These provisions of the Act affects associations which:

* have 25 or more members, and
* control access to membership by rules involving a selection process.

For example, clubs which require applicants for membership to make a personal application, be sponsored by other members and/ or go through some kind of selection process will be affected by the changes. If your club does fit in this category please follow the links below to guidance produced by the Government Equalities Office so that you are aware of the changes that came into force on 1 October and your responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010. http://www.equalities.gov.uk/pdf/2010-11-10%20GEO_EqAct_Private%20Clubs%20Guidance.pdf

New National League Match Forms

After the referee conference at the weekend it was confirmed by the competitions commission and supported by referee commission that the following documents would be required to be completed by all NVL teams on match day.

NVL Team Sheet
This is to be completed by both the home and away team and to be handed into the scorer during the warm-up. Only the players present on the day should be recorded onto the sheet. Player names should be written in capital letters and should appear in numerical shirt order on the list along with the player licence numbers.

The captain should be acknowledged on the team sheet with a circle around the shirt number. If your team has a libero you will need to write this next to the players name.

NVL Match Day Check List
It is the responsibility of the home team to make sure the 1st referee completes the check list at the end of the match. Only one check list needs to be filled in per match. The check list will need to be returned with the scoresheet.

If required, both forms can be downloaded from the Documents Page.

Channing Wood Entry Update

A quick reminder on playing matches at the prisons. Channings Wood have now had their security procedures enhanced to the same as Exeter Prison.

The PE department at each prison have to submit the list of the visiting team for vetting at least 48 hours prior to the match. Therefore in order for them to have this information, visiting teams need to send a list of names of all players who will be playing to Steve Barr for Channings Wood or Mike Patten for Exeter Prison (copied on this email), by Thursday evening, latest, prior to the match.

Not all players on the list have to be there on the day, but entry cannot be guaranteed for a player not on the list. It is the visiting teams responsibility to ensure they have enough players, so please try to nominate at least 8 or 9 names of people who are likely to be available for your match, in case of last minute hitches with any of your main team.

On the day ensure that all your team take with them photo ID (driving licence or passport)

Match & Club Insurance FAQ's

All clubs and members of the EDVA must have Public Liability Insurance (Item 4 of the EDVA constitution), for most clubs this is included in their EVA / VE annual membership. In order to reduce the cost of sports hall hire, various clubs within the association have agreed to use their own insurance (instead of purchasing cover from their venues), this includes clubs like Torexe and all clubs that use the EDVA Volleyball Centre at Exeter School.

The EVA have released an updated Insurance FAQ's document, stating what is required and what is covered or not covered etc. Please remember that clubs, event organizers, coaches and referee etc can also arrange their own cover outside of the EVA. All players taking part in a sporting activity should also consider taking out Personal Sports Injury cover, this is particularly relevant to any players who is self employed.

Delays in the Game

We have added a copy of the Referees Guidelines (2008) to the document page, it's 36 pages long and a bit of a read. We have also added an old document called "Delays in the Game", the document was originally issued to all clubs back in the 90's and it describes and gives advise to all teams, referees and coaches on what to do when faced with various situations. These guidelines have been enforced in the EDVA since it was issued and includes short items on: floor mopping, rolling the dead ball back under the net, what to do if a player kicks the ball in anger etc. The two page document is available via the document menu or direct at: www.edva.org.uk/word_forms/Delays_in_the_Game.pdf

Online Club Details

Last year we had a complaint about out of date club information on our site, to correct this we have provided direct links from the "Club Info" page to the respective club web site. Where a club has not got a web site, we have provided a web page (via Google Doc's) so every clubs can keep their own details up to date.

The page is live and can be edited, updated and configured by anyone with a Google documents account who has been invited or the club / team contacts (all 2007/08 club & team contacts have access).
