Who are we?
Volleyball is generally a minority activity in the UK, except in some small pockets around the country like Exeter. The Exeter and District Volleyball Association (EDVɅ) provides an indoor winter league and tournament program for member clubs in Devon and West Somerset and an associated members package for clubs and teams further afield. The association was formed in 1988 and also owns the Exmouth Beach Volleyball Club (EBVC), which runs a beach league and associated tournament program.
Volleyball is a very versatile sport, it is played indoors with a 6-A-Side game, on grass in the summer with a 4-A-Side game,on sand with Beach Pairs or recreational Beach 4’s or through Sitting Volleyball. Add to this Junior, Regional, and National indoor and outdoor leagues, tournaments, games, and events you end up with a fascinating all years round sport.
The EDVɅ runs an indoor league (September to April) consisting of differing divisions for various abilities and genders. The league is organised at the beginning of the season with all teams attending the annual fixtures meeting and then throughout the season teams play across the region to compete for league honors.
Supported by our committee members and dedicated volunteers the are additional opportunities for players to get involved including the EDVɅ Mixed Tournament but as the season comes to an end players flock toward the sand and grass, weather permitting, to take part in either the EBVC events or Coaver Clubs Summer Grass League. There are plenty of opportunities for development as well as we are often looking to discuss ways to support players through coaching, courses, or equipment support.
Volleyball is a great way of exercising and can improve hand-eye coordination, build strength and stay healthy but it also has a great range of social benefits including developing self-confidence, leadership, teamwork, and communication. EDVɅ committee meetings are held face-to-face or virtually as required. The beach sub-committee generally meets pre-season, dates & times will be published on the EBVC website.
Although we have a list of formal post holders (Officials – as required by our constitution), most people who help out, do not hold a committee position but volunteer or are appointed as required for each activity including catering, first aid, publicity, and fundraising.
Like all organizations, we are always on the lookout for new members to come help and support the running of the association. If you wish to support the EDVɅ or stand for a position on the committee please do not hesitate to get in touch with the Chair Person.
